Glenn Whelan has told The Telegraph he is unclear whether he has a future at Aston Villa.

The veteran started 24 out of 46 Championship games this past season.

The 35-year-old is out of contract at the end of June, and says no talks have taken place over an extension.

He says he understands Villa cannot formulate a plan for the summer until they know where they stand with regards to promotion. Villa take on Derby County in the play-off final later today.

Whelan said he is putting the club first, and does not wish to create any issues ahead of the Wembley final.

Whelan said: “It’s not an issue. I have not spoken to the manager. Everyone at the club is just waiting to see. We don’t want to unsettle anything. I am never busting down doors to find what is happening.

“I keep my head down and hopefully, if we get the win, something will happen. I am worried about Monday and getting the right result before anything else.”

Villa are far better off financially this summer than they were a year ago to deal with play-off failure.

The decision over Whelan will likely be made from a football standpoint rather than a financial one.

In the Premier League, it’s possible Villa may simply feel they can do better than the 35-year-old. This would be a luxury decision the club hope to be able to consider after today’s match.
