At the age of 33, Whelan is in the latter stages of his career but he will surely still possess ambitions of having at least one more season in the top flight.

Whelan produced an impressive performance and provided an assist for Albert Adomah as Villa prevailed past Ipswich Town with a 2-0 home victory on Saturday.
Given his experience, Whelan, who joined Villa in the summer from Stoke City, could prove to be a useful asset for Steve Bruce’s side this season.
Villa have an intriguing game away to Leeds on Friday in what is likely to be a fiercely-contested encounter and Whelan’s calmness in the heat of battle should be useful for his team.
