Rangers youngster Glenn Middleton has starred in the Scottish giants’ second string since his arrival from Norwich City in the January transfer window, and has been touted as a possible first teamer next season.

The 18-year-old winger has scored plenty of goals for Rangers’ Under-23 side, as well as turning provider on multiple occasions with the Gers’ reserves in excellent form – beating the likes of Benfica, Bayern Munich and Valencia last term.

Middleton failed to win a chance to shine in the first team but it is believed that he will have little time to wait for a call-up if he continues his excellent form under Kirkwood.

Where Dalcio and Aaron Nemane failed, youngster Middleton could break into the senior set-up despite the presence of Daniel Candeias, Jamie Murphy and new signing Ovie Ejaria – who can also play in central midfield.

However, the Gers have recently been linked with Manchester City winger Brandon Barker, who impressed on loan at Scottish Premiership rivals Hibernian last season.

The Scottish Sun claim Steven Gerrard is interested in landing the City academy product, after the 21-year-old scored two goals and laid on five assists in 27 Scottish Premiership appearances – 10 of which were from the bench.

Brandon Barker of England during the International Match between England U20 and Czech Republic U20 at Greenhous Meadow on September 7, 2015 in Shrewsbury, England.

It is believed a permanent deal could be struck for the England Under-20 international, who has just two years remaining on his current contract at the Etihad. City will not stand in his way, if the chance to leave the Premier League champions comes along.

Signing Barker, then, would be a top acquisition but could potentially hinder Middleton’s progression. The next stage in Middelton’s development is first-team football, but the presence of Barker would see that next step become a lot tougher to achieve.

A winger, and also considered in the same bracket as young and promising, Barker could be a great signing but he would prove to be an huge obstacle in Middleton’s rise to the senior side.
