Glenn Loovens says there was pressure on Carlos Carvalhal

Sheffield Wednesday won against Thomas Christiansen’s Leeds United in the Hillsborough Stadium in the Championship before the international break.

Sheffield Wednesday central defender Glenn Loovens has admitted to The Star that manager Carlos Carvalhal was under pressure heading into the match against Leeds United.

Wednesday took on Leeds at home just before the international break in the Championship.

The Owls headed into the match at the Hillsborough Stadium on the back of two successive defeats in the league, including a 4-2 loss to Sheffield United at home in the Steel City derby.

Carvalhal’s side, though, turned on the style against Leeds and got the better of the Whites 3-0.

It was one of the best performances from the Owls so far this season, and the result has put Wednesday back on track for a top-six finish in the Championship.

Loovens, though, has admitted that the pressure was on everyone heading into the match against Leeds, including manager Carvalhal.

“This is football and it was probably the best example,” Loovens told The Star. “You lose the derby, you lose against the bottom team and everything is doom and gloom.

“You win against Leeds and the positive vibes are there again. The pressure was on everyone – the players, Carlos – so it was good that we performed against Leeds.”

Loovens, who has been on the books of Wednesday since December 2013 when he joined them on a free transfer as reported by BBC Sport, may be relieved that the Owls won against Leeds, but his comments suggest that Carvalhal needs to get his team put together a run of positive results now.
