Glenn Loovens has posted a farewell message on Instagram after Sheffield Wednesday announced his release on Tuesday.

Club captain Loovens arrived at Hillsborough as a free agent four-and-a-half years ago and was a key part of the Owls’ transition from perennial relegation battlers to promotion contenders.

The 34-year-old has seen his involvement reduced this season, however, and has failed to appear in a single matchday squad since early March – ensuring the news of his departure arrived with little shock.

“My time has come to move on,” wrote Loovens. “I enjoyed my 4,5 years stay at this great club and want to thank everyone of you that made it so special. I wish you guys all the best for the future and hope that you get what you deserve.”

And teammates Daniel Pudil, Barry Bannan and Lucas Joao are among those who have replied to have replied so far.

Prior to Loovens’ release, alongside Ross Wallace and Jake Kean, several Wednesday fans called on Jos Luhukay to recall his fellow Dutchman for Sunday’s season finale at home to Norwich City.

Unlike Wallace and Kean, who are injured and out on loan respectively, Loovens should be available to feature at Hillsborough.

Should Sheffield Wednesday give Loovens one last run out against Norwich?
