Celtic are set to sign Sheffield Wednesday ace Liam Shaw – but Bhoys fans may not know all that much about him just yet.
The Bhoys have struck a pre-contract agreement to sign Shaw at the end of the season, with his Wednesday contract ending this summer.
Shaw, 19, has emerged through the ranks with his boyhood club, and leaving the Owls won’t have been an easy decision for him.
Yet with Celtic offering him a big move to Parkhead, Shaw couldn’t say no, and the Bhoys will be paying just £300,000 in compensation.
Capable of playing in midfield or defence, Shaw is a versatile prospect who has shown huge potential this season, and he has now been backed by a man who knows both Celtic and Wednesday well.
Former defender Glenn Loovens has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Shaw will prove to be a bargain for Celtic.
The Dutchman feels that Shaw will fit in well at Celtic, with centre back likely being his best position rather than centre back moving forward.
Loovens adds that Shaw is ‘aggressive’ and good on the ball, praising Celtic for getting such a cut-price move done ahead of next season.
“I think Celtic have probably got a bargain with this guy,” said Loovens. “Liam was quite young when I was at Sheffield Wednesday, so he wasn’t involved when I was in the first team. But I’ve seen him at least twice this year playing at centre-half and I thought he looked really good. From then on I started following him a little bit.”
“He is a guy with potential and he’s still very young, so he still has room to grow. He can play multiple positions, which isn’t always a good thing, but time will tell what his best position will be. I think he’s made a lot of progress this year. I could see him fitting in at Celtic. Probably centre-back will be his best position. He’s still got time to progress, but he’s good with the ball as he’s used to playing in midfield. He’s quite aggressive for a tall guy too,” he added.
