Glenn Hoddle has revealed he was left ‘scratching his head’ at a surprising decision made by Jose Mourinho in Tottenham’s 3-1 defeat to Liverpool.

The BT Sport panel were discussing the ex-Chelsea manager’s use of Carlos Vinicius, who didn’t feature last night despite an injury to Harry Kane.

When asked about Mourinho’s treatment of the Brazilian, Hoddle said: ‘I was surprised that Vinicius wasn’t brought on. It was a chance for him, and he’s put Lamela on and Son down the middle – I was scratching my head on that one.’

We can’t help but agree with Hoddle here.

Since arriving on a season-long loan from Benfica, Vinicius has been fed scraps of game-time, but has still managed to impress.

The 25-year-old has started four Europa League games and two FA Cup games this term, scoring six goals and registering three assists in those outings.

That is an excellent record, and he at least deserved the chance to deputise for Kane last night and show what he can do.

Mourinho’s switch ended up leaving Spurs toothless in attack.

Erik Lamela simply couldn’t trouble Andy Robertson, as the Argentine was no match for the Scot’s pace and energy.

Tottenham’s No.11 didn’t record a single shot, key pass, dribble, or cross after coming on last night, as WhoScored shows.

In fact, Lamela only had 17 passes and one interception to show for his efforts.

If Mourinho isn’t going to use Vinicius in a situation like this, then there really was no point in bringing him to the club.
