Glenn Hoddle appears to agree with Jose Mourinho’s management of Serge Aurier.

The former Paris Saint-Germain defender was left out of the squad on Sunday as Spurs lost 1-0 away to Brighton & Hove Albion.

It came a few days after Aurier was taken off by the Tottenham boss midway through their midweek defeat by Liverpool and then left the stadium for the second half.

The North Londoners host Chelsea tomorrow night and it’s definitely possible that the Ivory Coast right-back will be absent again.

The 28-year-old is no stranger to controversy and during his time at PSG, Laurent Blanc labelled him ‘pitiful’ for comments he made on social media.

And Tottenham icon Hoddle, speaking via his own podcast, has suggested that players like Aurier will ultimately always let the team down.

He said: “I’m sorry, but at the end of the day, if that’s the attitude a player has – and I’m not saying Aurier, it’s happened at other clubs – you’re carrying them.

“They’re not strong enough characters and in the end they’ll let you down. I think that’s how the manager will look at it.”

In addition to perceived attitude issues, Aurier can also be a liability on the field.

Only David Luiz has conceded more penalties than the Tottenham right-back since arriving in the Premier League three-and-a-half years ago and that right there illustrates that for all his talent, he can hold his team back to some extent.
