Speaking on Rio Ferdinand’s YouTube channel, Glenn Hoddle has been making a case for Michail Antonio to get an England call-up, claiming he’s as good a striker as anyone else in the Premier League.
The Hammers’ frontman has been excellent this season, and he’s led the London club to a real push for the Champions League places, and while they have fallen away in the last couple of weeks, it shouldn’t be forgotten just how good they have been.
Antonio has been at the forefront of the Hammers’ success, and Hoddle believes that Gareth Southgate should be considering him for next month’s European Championships.
“I’m going from the beginning of the season, I know he’s been injured, but I’m picking the team as though everyone is flying fit. This fella has been as good as anyone else in the league this year. Holding the ball up, turning, getting in behind, in the last 10 or 15 minutes of the game you put him on and give the centre-backs you’re playing against a completely different scenario,” Hoddle said.
There’s a reason Hoddle was considered a great manager when he was in charge of England.
Antonio has been one of the best attackers in the league this season, and he adds a different dynamic to any team he’s in.
The 31-year-old combines pace and power brilliantly and there are few defenders in world football who are good enough to deal with a player like that.
Whether or not he is selected for England this summer remains to be seen, but if Gareth Southgate does pick him, there’s every chance that he’ll score some vital goals for the Three Lions.
