Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Glenn Hoddle criticised the team’s lack of creativity after their Europa League exit at the hands of Gent.

The Belgians secured a 2-2 draw at Wembley, a 3-2 aggregate win, with Spurs falling short of beating them in either leg.

Hoddle summarised speaking to BT Sport‘s live post-game coverage that if Tottenham want to be top team, they should have progressed without any issues, with their exit made worse by the fact they picked a strong line up in both legs.

He said: “They should be winning this on aggregate by three clear goals. I think they are lacking creativity.

When things are tight for Tottenham I don’t see people stepping up, Eriksen’s got to do more against top teams.”

Eriksen did score the opener for Spurs but was unable to influence the game in the second half as he would have wanted to.

Spurs looked brighter when Heung-Min Son came off the bench but Hoddle feels Tottenham simply do not have enough options, and criticised their poor summer spending.

He added: “They are holding themselves back as a squad. £50 million between them they spent on two players, Janssen gets three or four minutes if he’s lucky, Sissoko is on the bench. That sort money should be spent on players who can go on and change a game.”

Hoddle was not criticising Pochettino’s decision not to use either player more, rather lamenting the situation that the head coach has two expensive players that he does not feel he can trust to make a difference.

Another expensive summer signing Georges-Kevin N’Koudou has similarly flopped, and questions need to be asked about the poor recruitment which has stopped their season reaching the heights it should have done.
