Glenn Hoddle has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur have the potential to challenge for the Premier League title, but need to spend some money.

Glenn Hoddle has suggested that Tottenham have the foundations in place to challenge for the Premier League title, but are still on course for a disappointing summer unless something changes, the Daily Mail reports.

Spurs remain the only side in the top four divisions of English football to not sign a player for their first-team squad during this current window, despite the fact that they sold Kyle Walker to Manchester City earlier in the summer.

The lack of business has left some fans pessimistic about their chances of replicating and building upon their achievements over the last couple of the years. And club legend Hoddle has agreed that the likelihood of them taking the next step will be increased by the side spending some money during the remaining weeks of the window, suggesting that they will not currently be able to reflect upon the window positively.

“It may be that they can pull off some signings in the next month which may surprise us and make last season’s runners up feel they can push on to challenge for the league,” he told the Mail.

“But it has been a disappointing summer. Losing Walker was a real crossroads moment. I would have loved for them to think big and try to get Isco or even Kylian Mbappe. Maybe the latter will end up at Real Madrid anyway.

“But Spurs have an opportunity with a young squad, a great manager and a new stadium, to be among the best in Europe. They have to seize it. And you can’t do that on the cheap.”

Mauricio Pochettino may perhaps be keen to argue that sticking with the squad that has threatened to enjoy some success recently will reap dividends the longer they continue to play together – especially if they can continue to bring through the academy starlets who take little time to adapt to the first-team.

But it appears that while most Tottenham fans are all in favour of predominantly sticking to the strategy that has been so effective in recent years, they would also not mind seeing some money spent to give the side that little bit extra that may perhaps give them a better chance of clearing that final hurdle.
