The Tottenham Hotspur legend is impressed with Victor Wanyama.

Glenn Hoddle has told Unibet that he has been pleasantly surprised by Victor Wanyama’s on-the-ball qualities for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

The 25-year-old joined Tottenham in a £12 million switch from Southampton in the summer, reuniting with Mauricio Pochettino after playing under the Argentine on the South Coast.

And the big Kenyan has proven a revelation for the most part, displacing Eric Dier as Spurs’ first-choice defensive midfielder with a series of fine, all-action displays.

But he can also play a bit, as Hoddle has discovered this season, and the Lilywhites legend says that his uncanny knack to keep the ball is something which has surprised him.

Speaking to Unibet ahead of tonight’s Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley, Hoddle said: “It’s a game Spurs need to win and Wanyama’s role will be vital.

“When he first come to the club I knew he had defensive qualities and, for me, he has really surprised with how well he has kept the ball.

“His first thought is to get the ball forward and that’s where I’ve been impressed with him this year.”

Tottenham sit second in Group E, one point behind Monaco and one point ahead of third-placed Leverkusen. With three games to go, it is a fiercely-tight group and losing tonight would not be detrimental for Spurs’ hopes of reaching the last 16, but it would make it that bit harder.

Defeat is a big no-no for Pochettino and co for another reason – they visit Arsenal in a North London Derby on Sunday, and losing tonight would be another big setback at a time when they need plenty of morale.
