The Tottenham Hotspur star is part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad this summer.
Tottenham legend Glenn Hoddle highlighted his one potential concern regarding Spurs ace Kieran Trippier, when writing a column for the Daily Mail, suggesting that the 27-year-old struggles when he is denied space by the opposition.
Trippier moved to Tottenham from Burnley in the summer of 2015, for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £3.5 million, and he has since gone on to make 76 appearances in all competitions for the Lilywhites.
Following Kyle Walker’s exit to Manchester City in the summer of 2017, the 27-year-old established himself as Spurs’ first choice right-back, and has consequently seen himself catapulted into the England national team setup.
He will now take part for the Three Lions in Russia this summer, although he will be once again competing with his old adversary Kyle Walker for a starting berth.
Hoddle raised a question regarding Trippier’s quality, however, when writing a column for the Daily Mail, suggesting that the Tottenham man is not the same player when he is denied space by the opposition:
“That’s my question mark with Trippier. When our system was outdoing theirs he had space and he is a good crosser of the ball. When space is denied and he’s one versus one, will he be able to drop his shoulder, get past his player and get crosses in? I’m not so sure.”
Hoddle’s criticism is a fair one, and if Trippier is to establish himself as a first-choice starter for England, he will surely have to improve that side of his game.
