Glenn Hoddle has suggested in The Daily Mail that he was not entirely happy with the performance of Dele Alli for England on Saturday evening.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder featured in England’s 2018 FIFA World Cup qualification UEFA Group F game against Malta at the Wembley Stadium in London.

The 20-year-old started the match and played for the entire 90 minutes, as the Three Lions registered a 2-0 victory.

The former Milton Keynes Dons midfielder played well for England and gave a very encouraging display, while also scoring his side’s second goal in the 38th minute.

Tottenham legend Hoddle was following the match, and he was not entirely happy with the performance of Alli.

“There also should have been more variety with Alli,” Hoddle wrote in The Daily Mail. “It seemed as if the Tottenham midfielder was always the one breaking forward.

“There is no reason why he shouldn’t have sat back to allow Rooney to do that on occasions.

“Rooney has the qualities that remind me of Teddy Sheringham: drop back into midfield to link play, but then arrive in the box.”

Alli played in the number 10 role against Malta, and the England international midfielder did well.

While Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney is not exactly bad in that position, for the Three Lions to progress in the coming years, an youngster like Alli should be given more chances in that role.

England will take on Slovenia away from home on Tuesday evening.
