The duo were speaking before Villa’s 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
Glenn Hoddle and Shay Given have shared their opinion on why Aston Villa are struggling this season on BT Sport.
Villa are currently bottom of the table after 15 games of the season, with just six points to their name.
They are winless since the opening day of the season and find themselves in danger of being cast adrift, with Sunderland currently 17th on 12 points.
And speaking before the draw with Southampton on Saturday, Given and Hoddle shared their views on the situation.
“They’re in a run where everyone has got to pull together and get themselves out of it. If they get one win, they’ll go and get three wins. That’s football,” Hoddle told BT Sport.
“The problem they have is confidence; confidence is so low it’s near on impossible,” added Given.
“Last week they play Watford at home and think it’s a real chance to get a win and springboard from there. [Instead] they lose 3-2 and the goals are poor again. It’s hard to get out of a rut and get your next result.”
Villa manager Remi Garde will be hoping that Saturday’s hard earned point against the Saints can act as the springboard towards that second victory.
The Villans were very much on the back foot in the game, as the home side dominated, but put in a resolute defensive display to earn a highly valuable point come the end of the game.
Their performance is sure to have boosted their ailing confidence, and Garde will be hoping that it can help them to a much-needed win next time out and spark the run that Hoddle suggests will follow it.
