Glen Johnson believes Mo Salah was taking the ‘easy option’ during Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with Burnley, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports (11/07/20 at 5:25 pm).
Salah, who is chasing the Premier League’s Golden Boot, failed to get on the scoresheet as Nick Pope’s heroics resulted in his team picking up a point against the champions.
Whilst Liverpool’s season is done and dusted, from the perspective of already being champions, individual prizes and team records are still on the line.
Following the conclusion of yesterday’s game, Johnson was asked by Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling whether Salah was trying too hard in pushing for that Golden Boot.
“I think he was [trying too hard in the quest for the Golden Boot], literally that,” Johnson told Sky Sports. “He was trying to guide the ball in as supposed to just getting through it sometimes.
“And we know that he is on track to fight for this Golden Boot. So, I think he got into a couple of opportunities where, months ago, he would have scored without even thinking about it.
“But today, he did look like he was trying to guide it in and sort of take the easy option rather than sometimes put his foot through it.”
There’s no doubt that Salah would back himself to get on the scoresheet at least one more time before the season ends.
It’s just a case of what the likes of Jamie Vardy, Danny Ings and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang do in these coming games because the race to be the Premier League’s top marksman for this campaign is hotting up.
Salah has shared the award with the likes of Aubameyang and Sadio Mane in recent seasons, but there’s no doubt that he would want to be the only one on top when the season ends.
Therefore, it’s perhaps understandable why the Egyptian is being more selfish in the final third.
