Glen Johnson has claimed on Soccer Saturday (19/09/20 at 12:25 pm/1:30 pm) that the ‘sensational’ Gareth Bale would join Manchester United over Tottenham if he had ‘the option’ to do so.
The former right-back thinks that United didn’t manage to push through the ‘final details’ in signing Bale and that’s the reason why he is now a Tottenham player once again.
Sky Sports have reported that Spurs are paying around £20 million in wages and loan fees for Bale’s signature.
The talk first started around why Man United haven’t been able to sign someone like Bale, as Johnson made it clear that Spurs are getting a player who will provide them with a much-needed ‘lift’.
“The only thing I could put it down to with United is they get to a point in the negotiations and then they must stall on the finest little details,” Johnson told Sky Sports.
“Bale, for example, if Bale has got the option to go to Tottenham or United, I believe he would go to United. But United clearly didn’t put the final details to it. It’s strange.

“He is [what Tottenham need] in terms of giving them a lift, for sure. We know he’s a sensational player. He hasn’t had enough football as I think he deserves.
“But he’s going to get a boost from everyone at the club. He’s going to drag the players who aren’t performing along with him. It’s an iconic signing that we are used to seeing from Mourinho.”

What is perhaps surprising is that someone like Daniel Levy has managed to put the money on the table to bring Bale back to the club.
They aren’t a club renowned for such deals, but Levy has seemingly pulled off another remarkable deal for the Champions League-chasing outfit.
Despite Johnson’s comments, what shouldn’t be a surprise is Bale choosing Spurs because that’s where he made a name for himself and it’s the performances at White Hart Lane which helped him land a dream move to Real Madrid seven years ago.
