The Everton-linked player would be an upgrade on Marko Arnautovic at West Ham United, according to Johnson.
The former West Ham United defender, Glen Johnson, can see the Diego Costa in Stratford after cold water was poured on reports linking the Spaniard with a move to Everton.
According to the Daily Mail, which was among the publications crediting Everton with interest in Costa, the former Chelsea striker’s relationship with his current employers, Atletico Madrid, has strained.
Atletico paid a reported fee of £57 million to bring the Brazil-born star back to Madrid from Chelsea in early 2018.
And having won league titles and countless trophies in both England and Spain, Costa could prove a coup for most Premier League clubs.
But asked where in particular where the 30-year-old may end up, Johnson told Jim White’s Talksport show: “I could see it happening at West Ham. I could see it somewhere like that.
“Obviously the club have shown over the years that if they want someone they’ll go and get them, and they could pay Diego the wages that no doubt he’d demand. And I reckon he’d try being a big fish in a smaller pond as well.
“I’d love to see him back, and I’d love to see him play for West Ham. If Arnie (Marko Arnautovic) is gone or going, I would have swapped the pair of them over anyway. I’d rather Diego in my team than Arnie, all day long.
“When he’s not performing or scoring, he’ll have an effect on the game and he’ll make space for other people who can score at the time and I reckon he could put them into the top seven or eight, easy.”
According to White, rumours of Everton interest in Costa are ‘complete nonsense’ and there is no clear indication yet as to where the player might end up.
