According to a report in the Telegraph, Aston Villa are set to release Micah Richards at the end of the season and Glasgow Rangers should consider offering him an escape route.

Richards has barely featured for Villa this season, with his career stalling.

However, if Rangers could get the former England international back to his best, they would arguably have the best defender in Scotland in their ranks.

Richards was once tipped to be one of England’s brightest prospects, and a move to Ibrox could be perfect for him.

The powerful defender is still only 29, meaning he is far from over the hill, and he could be a great addition to Rangers’ squad.

Of course, there are some concerns over his fitness and match sharpness – but if Rangers could nurse him back to his best, then they would be well rewarded by bringing the former Manchester City man to Glasgow.

And if Richards is released by Villa, then Rangers should be right at the front of the queue for his signature.
