Rangers defender Borna Barisic and Lee Wallace both featured for the development squad on Monday.

Barisic was making his Rangers return after two months out injured, and played 45 minutes.

For Barisic, he won’t be playing for the academy side for long. He will be fast-tracked back into Steven Gerrard’s squad as soon as he is deemed ready.

He becomes yet another obstacle in Lee Wallace’s unlikely path to first team football.

Wallace has not featured all season, despite being available after his unexplained club suspension ended.

In recent weeks he has been behind Jon Flanagan and Andy Halliday in the pecking order for the left-back spot.

Barisic will likely resume his place as first choice when he is judged to be fully fit.

Wallace is fourth choice at best, and any faint hopes he had of convincing Steven Gerrard to recall him, have probably faded with the Croatian’s return to fitness.

A January exit appears best for the 31-year-old.
