Mackay was linked with the Rangers manager’s job before Pedro Caixinha’s appointment at Ibrox.
Former Wigan Athletic manager Malky Mackay
It’s fair to say Malky Mackay wasn’t the most popular Rangers managerial candidate.
The former Celtic defender emerged briefly as the favourite to replace Mark Warburton at Ibrox, before the Gers’ appointment of Pedro Caixinha at the weekend.
But it’s not only Mackay’s Parkhead ties which caused concern throughout the Rangers fanbase, with an underwhelming spell at Wigan Athletic and a well-documented incident, which prevented the Scot’s appointment by Crystal Palace, setting the alarm bells ringing.
And it seems that even the mere presence of Mackay at Rangers is enough to boil the blood of some Light Blues supporters, after the club’s academy Twitter account posted images of the 45-year-old’s recent visit to Auchenhowie.
Fear not, though, Rangers fans, as Mackay will not be moving to Ibrox any time soon, despite reports Caixinha is looking to hire an assistant coach with a superior knowledge of Scottish football.
The former Watford boss was recently appointed as the Scottish Football Association’s performance director, responsible for overseeing the development of young players – which perhaps explains his visit.
