Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are said to be chasing a deal for Jon Flanagan, with Steven Gerrard keen to snap him up.
Steven Gerrard is looking to sign Jon Flanagan for Glasgow Rangers, according to a report in the Daily Record, and that should come as no surprise.
The new Rangers boss and Flanagan were teammates at Liverpool back in the 2013/14 campaign, and it was back then that the full-back really came on to Gerrard’s radar.
Flanagan was given a run of games in Liverpool’s first-team that season, and even featured in a Merseyside derby, and Gerrard was so impressed with the youngster.
He said to the Liverpool Echo: “He [Flanagan] doesn’t get many headlines but as captain of the team he was the player I am most proud of.
“I thought he was unbelievable. He’s been fighting hard in training just to get in the 18, never mind the starting 11, but the manager threw him in at the deep end against a top class player like Kevin Mirallas and I thought he was sensational.
“It was one of the best derby performances I have seen for many years.
“He reminds me of (Jamie) Carragher in a lot of ways. I don’t think you would judge Jon in terms of ability or skill, but he is all about heart, desire, determination and fighting for the cause.”
Rangers are now said to be on the hunt for Flanagan, as Gerrard looks to get the defender’s career back on track.
The 25-year-old has struggled for game time of late, and not fulfilled the potential that Gerrard once thought he had.
A move to Ibrox could do Flanagan the world of good though, and he would help to tighten up Rangers’ defence for next season.
Gerrard has already been quick to make additions to his backline at Rangers this summer, and Flanagan could reportedly be the next new man to arrive in Glasgow, if a deal between the Light Blues and Liverpool can be agreed.
