Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers picked up a clean sheet with Nikola Katic in their defence last match.
Katic began the season in Rangers’ starting line-up, but fell out of favour over recent months.
Gerrard regularly overlooked Katic, leaving him out of Rangers’ match day squads altogether on occasion.
However, the 22-year-old came back into Rangers’ defence at the weekend, and helped them keep a clean sheet against Livingston.
Rangers won 3-0 away from home, with Katic putting in a commanding display at the back.
And Gerrard says that the Croatian’s performances in training led to him being recalled.
“He’s been very strong in training and he deserved the opportunity and he took it with both hands,” Gerrard said.
“When you’re out of a team and you’re looking in and desperate to play then you have to learn and speak to the right people around you and be honest with yourself.”
Rangers’ win over Livingston was much needed, as they kept the pressure on at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.
Gerrard’s side are next in action again this evening when they take on Cowdenbeath, and Katic will be hoping to be given the nod again.
