Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers striker Kyle Lafferty scored against Celtic earlier this season.
Lafferty was snapped up by Rangers during the summer transfer window, and the Northern Irish international showed why Gerrard was so keen to bring him in last night.
Lafferty scored with a fine finish, as Rangers picked up a a point in Spain.
And Gerrard has claimed that Lafferty proved once again that he is a scorer of ‘big goals’ last night.
“It’s not a surprise to me, it’s the reason I played him, it’s the reason I bought him,” Gerrard said. “I know he likes the big stage, I know he’s capable of scoring big goals.
“Before we signed him he scored an important goal against Celtic. It doesn’t matter who he’s playing against, the standard of the team, he believes in himself, he backs himself.
“Sometimes away from home in Europe when you’re playing up on your own it can be a thankless task and you can give in and get frustrated.
“I’m no expert on being a No 9, there’s one at the back he will tell you, but he kept it low and used the pace to guide it in. It was a fantastic finish and one that our man at the back will be very proud of.”
Lafferty’s goal for Rangers yesterday was really well taken, as he flicked in Borna Barisic’s cross at the near post.
Lafferty was forced to lead the line for Rangers in Alfredo Morelos’ absence, and he performed the role really well.
Rangers have now made a fine start to their Europa League campaign, and their ability to avoid defeat last night certainly helps their chances of qualifying from the group.
Gerrard’s side are next in action at the weekend, when they take on St. Johnstone.
