Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rio Ferdinand has been waxing-lyrical about Liverpool’s Divock Origi, drawing comparisons to Teddy Sheringham.
The Belgian striker may not be one of Liverpool’s best players, but over the years, he’s proven to be amongst their most important.
Make no mistake about it, Origi is the man for the big moments.
He’s scored crucial goals at crucial times for years, from Champions League finals to Merseyside Derbies, and he’s done so while never really being a regular starter.
However, despite playing limited minutes, Origi has never kicked up a fuss, and Ferdinand has commended the attacker for playing his role perfectly.
What’s been said about Origi?
Ferdinand praised Origi.
“Special mention please, Divock Origi, we need to speak about this guy,” Ferdinand said.
“This goes back to my point. I hear people slam squad players. Players like him, you don’t win big trophies without them. Someone who can sit out for 10 games and not moan, then he comes in and gives his all. Darren Fletcher was like that, Jonny Evans was like that sometimes, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Teddy Sheringham too. Everyone knew Yorke and Cole as the main strikers, but these two are the cult figures at the club for understanding the requirements and not moaning.”

So many players have scored so many more goals for Liverpool than Origi, but not many will leave behind the legacy he will.
Origi, much like Solskjaer and Sheringham at Manchester United, has written himself into Anfield folklore by turning up in the big moments, and while Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Virgil van Dijk will rightly be recognised as Liverpool’s biggest stars of this era, history will be kind to Origi.
Clips of his goals against Barcelona, Tottenham, Everton and Wolves will be shown for years to come, and with Liverpool battling for the quadruple, Origi could yet have another chapter to write in this story.
