Paul Merson has urged Arsenal to hand Kieran Tierney the captaincy because he’s someone who ‘gives everything’, as he told Sky Sports.

The outspoken TV pundit was responding to the admission from current Arsenal captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang where he stated that he’s not the most vocal of people.

There are a number of dark clouds hovering over the Emirates Stadium and Mikel Arteta is finding it very hard to lift it, but at least one Arsenal player is showing him the light.

Merson thinks Tierney should be the one wearing the armband, as he praised the £25 million man [Sky Sports] for the character he has shown.

“I would give it to Tierney as he’d run through a brick wall for you,” said Merson.

“He’s the one player I look at who gives everything, and I’d give him the captaincy. There’s a way of showing how much you care, and the relationship he is building with Bukayo Saka down the left looks decent.

“Arsenal need that all around the pitch, and at the moment they’re in a relegation battle.”

Added with Gabriel Martinelli, who impressed upon his return in the League Cup, Bukayo Saka and Tierney need to be certain starters.

Throw in a fully-fit Thomas Partey into the mix, alongside fellow summer signing Gabriel and goalkeeper Bernd Leno, then Arsenal have something to build on.

But they are finding it hard just to stand, at this moment in time, as Arteta will only be backed a certain way if results continue to head a certain way.
