Newcastle United legend Shay Given has exclusively told The Mag that Rafa Benitez must be given more money to spend than just £20million on a player, and has urged a takeover to be completed before January.

The Daily Mirror claims current owner Mike Ashley is sitting on a £250million offer from Amanda Staveley and her PCP Capital Partners, as fans become increasingly disgruntled with Ashley’s ownership.

On the pitch, the Toon are struggling too. Just one point from a possible 21 in the Premier League has seen Benitez’s men slip into 16th place and just two points above the relegation zone following Saturday’s 3-2 loss to Leicester City.

Former goalkeeper Given has urged the pending takeover to be completed sooner rather than later, and stated that Newcastle need more investment than spending just £20million on a player.

“Hopefully if the takeover does happen, the new owners come in and they back Rafa then anything can happen,” Given said.

“To achieve success in the modern market today requires a lot of money, because the players are so expensive now, £10m or £20 million wouldn’t even buy a proper player anymore so its imperative that Rafa gets the money to invest in the team.”

Benitez is lacking in depth in a number of positions, with it being no secret that a new striker, goalkeeper, left-back and a central midfielder are likely to be targeted in the January transfer window – if the funds are there to spend.

The Toon are back in action on Wednesday evening as they play host to an in-form Everton side under the stewardship of former boss Sam Allardyce, who will be in buoyant mood following their 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday.
