Alan Shearer has urged Everton to hand the managerial keys to Duncan Ferguson until the end of the season, as he told Premier League Productions (16/01/22 at 1:15 pm)
The former striker pointed out that Ferguson has ‘got a tune out of the players’ before and he understands the club.
Everton sacked Rafa Benitez as manager on Sunday after his ill-fated half-a-season spell at Goodison Park.
It was pretty clear that the appointment shouldn’t have been made in the first place and it is one that has put Everton in a much worse position, as a result.
Numerous names have been thrown about regarding who will now take the hot seat, either until the end of the season or for the long term.
And Shearer explained why he feels Everton’s answer to their next manager, until the end of the campaign, is staring them right in the face.
“What I would do if I was that football club is give it to big Duncan until the end of the season,” said Shearer.
“Then have a look at where they are. They know there are huge issues behind the scenes, otherwise, they wouldn’t have spent half a billion and gone through five or six different managers as they have done.
“He knows the football club. He has done it before. He has got a tune out of the players when he has been in that position, so if it’s going to happen, I would give it to him until the end of the season and see what happens.”
Whatever road Everton go down, it wouldn’t be a surprise if some fans, or even most, don’t trust the call those in the boardroom will make.
Given that they handed Benitez the keys in the first place, then there will be a worry as to which road they decide to go down now.
What makes matters worse for the Toffees is the fact that they have spent hundreds of millions, yet they have gone backwards, as a result.
At least giving it to Ferguson would mean that the fans trust the man on the touchline, rather than questioning his every move.
