Giuseppe Iachini claims he could have moved to Leeds United last year.
Former Udinese head coach Giuseppe Iachini
Italian manager Giuseppe Iachini has told Tutto Mercato Web that he would be open to managing abroad, despite seemingly snubbing a move to Leeds United last summer.
Iachini, 53, had a lengthy playing career in his native Italy, most notably turning out for Fiorentina, and he has also spent the entirety of his managerial career in Italy too.
Venezia, Cesena, Piacenza, Chievo, Brescia, Sampdoria, Siena and Palermo have all appointed Iachini as their manager in the past, whilst Udinese brought him in as their manager last summer.
Iachini’s spell with Udinese didn’t last long though, as after being appointed in May, he was sacked in October 2016, and has remained out of work since.
Leeds United manager Garry Monk
His name may be familiar to some Leeds fans, given that he was strongly linked with a move to Elland Road before the Whites brought in Garry Monk as a replacement for Steve Evans.
Tutto Mercato Web reported last summer that Massimo Cellino wanted to lure Iachini to West Yorkshire, but he ended up at Udinese, with Monk taking the job instead – and the Whites will certainly be happy with how things played out.
General view inside Elland Road
Now, Iachini has told Tutto Mercato Web that he did in fact have the chance to go to Leeds last summer, and whilst the move didn’t go through, he would be open to moving abroad for the first time in his footballing career.
“There was a chance to go to Leeds last year,” said Iachini. “There may be some opportunities abroad, why not?” he added.
Whilst there are question marks over Monk’s long-term future at Elland Road given that he has yet to sign a new contract, the chances of Iachini getting another chance to manage Leeds seem very slim, given that Cellino has since sold the club to Andrea Radrizzani, and he appeared to be the driving force behind interest in Iachini.
