Giovanni van Bronckhorst has told his post-match Rangers press conference that both Ryan Jack and John Lundstram were excellent in the Ibrox side’s historic win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday night.
Goals from Alfredo Morelos, James Tavernier and Lundstram – as well as an own goal from Dan-Axel Zagadou – saw Rangers go on to win 4-2 against a side that were expected to cruise past van Bronckhorst’s men.
Jude Bellingham and Raphael Guerreiro did score for Dortmund, but the win gives Rangers a huge chance to qualify for the Europa League quarter-finals. Away goals, though, no longer count in the knockout rounds.
Lundstram scored only his third goal since joining Rangers from Sheffield United last summer – while Scotland star Jack produced a near-perfect performance in midfield. Van Bronckhorst was full of praise for the duo.
“We are really happy to have him [Jack] back in the team, as you know he was struggling with injuries. Together with John, you see the impact they have on the team, offensively and defensively.
“Those two had a really great performance. Your midfielders are your most important part of the squad as they help the attack and defence. Our midfield was excellent,” van Bronckhorst said in his press conference.
Van Bronckhorst on Lundstram and Jack: Rangers stars shine
When van Bronckhorst named the starting line-up, there will have been eyebrows raised over the axe of Glen Kamara – and even perhaps, the omission of Aaron Ramsey. But the gamble, so to speak, paid off.
The duo were hard-working against one of the best footballing sides in European football. They played intelligently, tactically but also aggressively when needed. In possession, their passing was superb.
It was probably Lundstram’s best performance in a Rangers shirt and Jack’s was certainly up there – made even more incredible given he has just returned from a long-term injury. Superb from the midfield duo.
