Giovanni van Bronckhorst has paid tribute to the versatility of Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara, who played as a more attacking midfielder against Red Star Belgrade on Thursday night. The Gers secured a brilliant 3-0 win.
Kamara, 26, was the surprise man to play slightly advanced against Red Star Belgrade on Thursday night – in front of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram. It came after van Bronckhorst chose to play Joe Aribo out wide.
That is, despite having Amad Diallo and Scott Wright on the bench. Kamara did not have the most effective of matches, but WhoScored still report that he completed 24 of his 28 passes – and two long balls that were successful.
It was perhaps a slightly cautious move from van Bronckhorst, deciding to pack the midfield to nullify Red Star. It worked, clearly, as the scoreline read 3-0 at full-time. On Friday, van Bronckhorst praised the Rangers ace.
“Glen is very versatile. He can play any area in midfield, it depends on the opponent. Definitely an area he can play in again in the future. I’m really happy with our strength and depth in midfield,” van Bronckhorst said.
Van Bronckhorst on Kamara: Rangers ace best in holding midfield
Kamara is a player that benefits from having possession with the final third in front of him. An area in which he can feed the likes of Aribo, Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi and the other attacking Rangers players.
The Finland international has scored two goals in his last five league games, but he is not the kind of player you normally see creating goals – more feeding the players that will do that job. His defensive work rate is strong.
Rated at £10million (GMS), the ex-Arsenal man is much more effective in holding midfield but clearly, van Bronckhorst feels he can play in more than just one position.
