Giovanni van Bronckhorst has told Wednesday’s press conference that Rangers will be without Aaron Ramsey on Thursday night, in the second leg Europa League play-off clash against Borussia Dortmund at Ibrox.
Ramsey, 31, has only managed four appearances for Rangers since joining the club on loan from Juventus. Making substitute appearances against Hearts and Hibernian, he then started against Annan in the Scottish Cup.
The Wales ace was a late sub against Dortmund in the first leg, but was then missing from Sunday’s draw against Dundee United – and van Bronckhorst has given a further update on the ex-Arsenal midfielder ahead of Thursday.
Ramsey was ruled out on Sunday with a calf issue and that looks like it will cause him to miss the second leg against Dortmund at Ibrox. A blow, with Rangers looking to hold on to the two-goal lead they boast from last week.
Van Bronckhorst on Ramsey: Injury frustrating for Rangers fans
While there is still three months of action still to play and a possible round of 16 clash in the Europa League, Ramsey’s muscle problem will be frustrating for Rangers fans. It will also be worrying, for van Bronckhorst.
The Gers are likely to be paying quite a considerable figure in terms of wages for the Juventus midfielder. He might have even cost a loan fee. So, for him to have managed one start and three sub outings, it is frustrating.
Rangers were extremely excited at Ramsey’s arrival, but now fans will be hoping that that hype is not premature – as he struggles to show the fitness required to start for van Bronckhorst’s side.
Ianis Hagi, of course, remains sidelined until the end of the season.
