Mauricio Pochettino has wanted a creative midfielder for years, so Tottenham Hotspur signing Giovani Lo Celso should not be treated as a sign Christian Eriksen is about to leave.

Tottenham are said to be closing in on a deal for Lo Celso with Real Betis, with the Argentine set to join for £45 million according to The Sun.

The potential transfer has seriously excited Spurs fans, but it has also caused some concern.

With Eriksen’s future uncertain, some Tottenham supporters have been left to think that Lo Celso is the Dane’s direct replacement.

However, that is not necessarily true, as Pochettino has wanted to add more creativity to Tottenham’s midfield department for years.

Even before Eriksen’s future was in doubt, Tottenham were looking for an attacking midfielder.

In 2017, Spurs moved for Ross Barkley but were unable to get a deal over the line, as The Times reported.

Tottenham then attempted to get Jack Grealish off Aston Villa last summer (Daily Mirror), but they were once again left disappointed.

Spurs finally seem to have landed their playmaker this year though, with Lo Celso on the verge of a move to White Hart Lane.

Lo Celso’s arrival will increase competition for places at Tottenham, but it certainly does not signify that Eriksen is definitely going to leave.

Pochettino has clearly felt that Spurs need to add more creativity to their ranks for years.

And if Tottenham do get the transfer over the line, the only feeling at White Hart Lane should be excitement, not apprehension.
