Wayne Rooney was dropped by David Unsworth on Sunday for Everton’s clash against Southampton.

The interim manager is reportedly set to take charge of his eighth and final game as caretaker on Wednesday night, as Sky Sports claim the Toffees are closing in on the appointment of Sam Allardyce.
Rooney’s form has been somewhat indifferent since returning to Goodison Park from Manchester United in the summer transfer window, 13 years after he first left the club to move to Old Trafford, scoring five goals in 19 outings.

Speaking on Alan Brazil’s TalkSPORT Breakfast Show on Wednesday morning, former Toffee Ginola claimed Unsworth simply cannot cope with an ego such as Rooney’s and claimed Allardyce will bring the best out of the versatile attacker.
“Sam [Allardyce] is going to bring back the best of Wayne Rooney,” Ginola said. “Managers these days – it’s not how you’re going to do training, it’s how you’re going to handle the egos of the players.
“Wayne Rooney is a huge name in the world of football. David Unsworth is small compared to Rooney – no disrespect. Rooney, at Manchester United, proved he was such a huge player. Unsworth is not capable of handling players like that.”

Rooney, 32, was dropped by Unsworth on Sunday afternoon and remained an unused substitute for the entire game as the Merseyside club were comfortably beaten by Southampton 4-1 on the south coast.
It succumbed Unsworth to a fifth defeat during his seven matches in charge, losing to Chelsea, Leicester City, Lyon and Atalanta as well as the Saints. He has the chance to restore some dignity on Wednesday night as the Toffees go up against David Moyes and West Ham United.
