Over the summer Liverpool lost a key midfielder. The Reds couldn’t come to an agreement to keep their Dutch icon and he joined PSG. Comments from Gini Wijnaldum suggest that Liverpool must have a specific type of signing in mind.

Liverpool summer window
This summer was a quiet one for the Reds on the incoming front.
Ibrahima Konate was the only signing and he came the day the window opened.
Instead a number of players left the club.
Gini Wijnaldum was the highest profile departure from Liverpool.
The Dutchman’s contract at Anfield expired and he subsequently joined the PSG mercenary revolution.
Gini Wijnaldum on Liverpool exit
Fans had begged for the Dutchman to stay at Anfield.
He was the most reliable player the club had, he rarely missed a Premier League game and clocked more minutes than anybody else during the Jürgen Klopp reign.
As a result the decision not to give him a suitable extension baffled many supporters.
Gini Wijnaldum has opened up on leaving Liverpool, telling L’Equipe:
“Several months ago, I had expressed the desire to stay in Liverpool but, without going into details, Liverpool did not give me the feeling of wanting to keep me.”
Specific signing in mind?
Liverpool not showing a desire to keep Gini Wijnaldum may indicate a change of direction.
The Reds may have a specific type of signing in mind to replace him next summer.
Otherwise it doesn’t make sense to let your most reliable player go on a free transfer.
One explanation is that there will a tactical shift which requires a different type of player.
The question is: who?
