Quoted by the Daily Star, Gilberto Silva has warned Arsenal to be wary of what happened at Manchester United when replacing Arsene Wenger.

The Frenchman celebrated 20 years in charge of the London club this week, making him the second longest-serving manager in Premier League history.

He is into the final year of his current deal with the Gunners and is yet to agree and extension beyond that.

In fact, all indications have been that he will bring his long reign to an end next summer.

It remains to be seen if that is the case, although the Arsenal hierarchy are likely to be drawing up a list of potential candidates regardless.

And Gilberto Silva says that United’s struggles post Sir Alex Ferguson should serve as a warning to his former club.

“I hope people do realise that, because when he leaves the club at some point it won’t be so easy to replace him,” the Daily Star quotes him saying.

“You can see, for example, at Manchester United where it’s not been so easy to replace Sir Alex Ferguson. It’s important for Arsene and for the club to start to prepare somebody for when he leaves.”

Manchester United’s struggles are likely to be playing a big part in Arsenal’s thinking about life post-Wenger.

In particular, they will have seen how David Moyes struggled and there is every chance that is putting them off appointing their own homegrown coach.

Indeed, given the influx of big name managers into the league, it seems very likely they will seek their own big appointment to ensure they can keep up with their rivals.
