Gilberto Silva has responded to an Arsenal fan by telling him he is ready to join Mikel Arteta’s backroom staff – in what would be a sensational return to the club he played for 244 times as a player between 2002 and 2008.

Silva, now, 45, joined Arsenal almost 20 years ago as a player from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro and has remained an Arsenal icon since. A part of the Invincibles side, he won a Premier League title and two FA Cups.

Now retired, after a successful spell at Greek side Panathinaikos and then Gremio and back to Mineiro – Silva is looking for his next role in football. He has hosted a popular podcast, knows as “The Invisible Wall” of late.

He is also renowned for communicating freely with Arsenal fans on Twitter, and responded to a supporter who suggested that he returns to the club where he enjoyed so much success. He is open to joining Arsenal.

Silva back to Arsenal: Appointment would make plenty of sense

Arsenal could do with strengthening their midfield. A new signing might be the answer, improving what they already have is just as important. In Arteta and Silva, Arsenal would have two holding midfield legends.

That is, if Arsenal do look into bringing Silva back. He has worked at another of his previous clubs in Panathinaikos as a technical director. His credentials on the training ground are unknown.

But the likes of Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga would surely benefit – as would the large Brazilian contingent at Arsenal; Gabriel Martinelli, Gabriel and sporting director Edu.
