Gilberto Silva has reacted to an Arsenal fan on Twitter by stating that Champions League football should be the goal for Mikel Arteta’s side – after Monday night’s 2-0 loss to Newcastle. Tottenham are favourites for fourth.

In a topsy-turvy race to achieve Champions League qualification, Arsenal needed to win to re-assert themselves in fourth place on Monday night. Instead, they were easily beaten 2-0 by a brilliant Newcastle on Tyneside.

It sees Spurs stay in fourth. Going into the final game of the season, Spurs are two clear and boast a much better goal difference – 15 more than Arsenal. It means they only need a point against Norwich on Sunday.

A Norwich side that are already down, and rock-bottom of the Premier League. Silva responded to a fan after the loss, stating that progression under Mikel Arteta is qualification for Champions League football.

Gilberto Silva reacts as Arsenal lose fourth: Is it still progression?

Without a doubt. After two consecutive fifth-placed finishes for Arsenal, to even be in the mix for fourth with two games to play is impressive. But given there was no firm candidate, Arsenal have missed an opportunity.

Yes, it is progression – but there was a chance to really go all the way and nab fourth. With Tottenham now set to establish themselves; Antonio Conte in place, Harry Kane staying, Arsenal could fall behind.

Spurs have the manager, players, facilities and just needed Champions League football to complete the jigsaw. Arsenal could go backwards, given they will be playing Thursday-Sunday football.
