Ryan Giggs wants to get into management but instead of targeting Everton and Leicester should he seriously consider Sunderland?

Sunderland are on search for a new permanent manager after the sacking of Simon Grayson following the 3-3 Championship draw with bottom-placed Bolton Wanderers.

Captain John O’Shea is the current favourite to succeed Grayson with Skybet at 8/11, while a host of other familiar names are being linked with the job.

However, down at 28/1 is someone for whom this could be the perfect opportunity to finally break into management, even if it is probably at a lower level than he was hoping.

That man is Ryan Giggs, someone who has not been involved in the dugout since departing Old Trafford in 2016 following Jose Mourinho’s appointment as boss. Prior to that Giggs had been caretaker at the Red Devils following the dismissal of David Moyes in 2014 and then spent two years as Louis van Gaal’s assistant.

It is well known that the Welshman wants a managerial job, but the 43-year-old is perhaps setting his sights too high in holding out for a Premier League position.

In October, with both Everton and Leicester City having vacancies, Giggs was quoted by Sky Sports: “I think you look at those two teams, Leicester being champions two seasons ago, Everton being a fantastic club with a fantastic history, for me these are clubs I would be interested in.”

Leicester have since appointed Claude Puel while the former United star is not in the frame for the Toffees and with extremely limited experience that is no surprise.

Yet the Black Cats, currently in the relegation zone in England’s second tier, may well consider giving Giggs his big chance should he put forward a convincing case. Instead of wanting to walk straight into a top flight position, the ex-midfielder should instead be willing to drop down the divisions and earn his opportunity.
