There’s a new Giannis Antetokounmpo rumour doing the rounds, and it’s a bold one.
Grant Afseth and the Dallas Hoops Journal have outlined a potential trade scenario that would involve the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Clippers. In this setup, Giannis would end up in Boston, Jaylen Brown would head to the Clippers, and Milwaukee would get the Clippers’ No. 5 overall pick.
Whether there’s any real chance of this happening is another question altogether. The salary-cap complications alone make it unlikely for now. But if this deal ever did materialise, it’d be worth asking which team actually benefits most.
If you’re looking at it from Boston’s perspective, the appeal is clear. Giannis is one of the few players in basketball who can change a franchise’s championship outlook overnight. The Celtics would be trading an All-NBA wing for a former MVP, and if Jayson Tatum stays healthy, that duo would become one of the most intimidating pairings in the league.
It’s a hefty price tag though. Brown is still in his prime and under contract long-term, already proven as a co-leader on a championship-level team. Boston would be betting that Giannis is enough of an upgrade to justify breaking up a core group that has won consistently for years. The reward could be massive, but so are the risks, as they’d be sacrificing depth and continuity for something that doesn’t come with any guarantees.

Los Angeles could quietly walk away with the best outcome
While Giannis would naturally be the focus of any deal, the Clippers might end up getting exactly what they need. Brown would step in as a key part of their future, while Leonard and Harden are clearly nearing the end of their peak years, Brown is still playing his best basketball.
That’s an important factor for a team entering the Intuit Dome era and dealing with questions about how much longer Leonard and Harden can lead.
Brown brings top-level scoring, strong defence on the wing, and a track record of staying healthy – all without the heavy price tag that usually comes with a player like Giannis. Bringing him in could help them avoid a rebuild and might turn out to be one of their smartest long-term moves.
Milwaukee’s verdict would shape the entire deal
From the Bucks’ perspective, it all hinges on whether they still see a title window with Giannis. If the answer is yes, no return package will ever truly feel adequate. Teams almost never come out ahead in the short term when trading away a superstar of his calibre.
If that belief has faded, though, Milwaukee’s view of the trade could shift. The No. 5 pick immediately stands out as a key piece for their future, and while more draft assets would be expected in any real negotiation, acquiring young talent might offer a path forward that doesn’t exist now.
Even so, this version of the trade leaves questions for Milwaukee. It clearly outlines how Boston lands Giannis and how LA gets Brown but doesn’t fully address whether what comes back is enough to justify moving the player who changed their franchise forever.
The Clippers might have the most to gain
Even though a Giannis-Tatum pairing would raise the Celtics’ ceiling higher than anyone else’s, the Clippers might quietly come out ahead. Adding Brown gives them a two-way star in his prime who fits their current timeline and future plans without giving up the massive haul it usually takes to get a player of that calibre.
Milwaukee would have the hardest questions to answer. No draft pick, no matter how high, can replace what Giannis means to that franchise. But that’s what makes this rumour so interesting. It’s nowhere close to real, but it forces teams to consider just how much one superstar is really worth.
