Rangers’ stadium Ibrox is renowned as one of the most atmospheric stadiums in British football.
Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has been quoted by Football Italia as giving Rangers fans some surprise praise after a Q & A session on his Instagram story.
Buffon, 40, remains playing in professional football with French champions PSG after leaving Juventus to join Thomas Tuchel’s side in the summer. He has played six times this season, keeping three clean sheets.
The Italian is renowned as one of the most legendary goalkeepers to ever play the game, as he closes in on his 900th club appearance. His trophy haul includes nine Serie A titles and a World Cup, but the Champions League still eludes him.
The 176-time Italy international was asked what were the best and most exciting grounds he has played at, and he picked Ibrox in his top three alongside Liverpool’s Anfield and Galatasaray’s Turk Telecom Stadium.
“There are a lot of them,” Buffon said. “Definitely Anfield, in Liverpool, that was one of the few stadiums – along with Rangers in Glasgow and Fenerbahce in Istanbul – where there was such commotion for the first 15-20 minutes that I had trouble concentrating.”
Rod Wallace’s equaliser saw Rangers draw with Buffon’s Parma at Ibrox back in 1998 in the UEFA Cup, before Parma and Buffon returned a year later only for the Gers to win 2-0 in a Champions League qualifying tie.
Goals from Claudio Reyna and Tony Vidmar saw Rangers win against a side that boasted Lillian Thuram, Fabio Cannavaro, Dino Baggio and Ariel Ortega alongside Buffon.
