Mehrdad Ghodoussi and defender Sven Botman and plenty more have reacted on Instagram after in-form Newcastle United star Kieran Trippier was included in England’s World Cup squad by Gareth Southgate on Thursday afternoon.
Trippier, 32, seems to be getting better with age. Captaining Newcastle on a regular basis this season with Jamaal Lascelles struggling to get into the Toon starting line-up, Trippier is in excellent form. It has seen him called-up.
In what is the ex-Tottenham and Atletico Madrid star’s second World Cup, he will be one of the players expected to start. Whether that is on the right side of the defence, or at left-back. Luke Shaw is the only recognised left-back.
Trippier took to Instagram after it was confirmed that he was part of the 26-man squad that would be travelling to Qatar. He is accompanied by Newcastle teammates Callum Wilson and Nick Pope, who also made the squad.
Ghodoussi and Botman react as Newcastle star Trippier included
Trippier is likely to be the first-choice right-back, with Kyle Walker still recovering from surgery. Trent Alexander-Arnold is also in the squad, but whether the Liverpool ace will start is another question. Southgate is not his biggest supporter.
Southgate has also made the decision to include Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher, Leicester’s James Maddison and Wilson. The latter being picked after six goals in 10 games. His inclusion sees Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham miss out.
Kalvin Phillips has also got the call-up, having only made a handful of sub appearances for Manchester City since his move from Leeds – due to shoulder surgery. The likes of Fikayo Tomori, Jadon Sancho and others are not on the plane.
Responding to his post, Ghodoussi – who is the husband of Amanda Staveley – and Toon defender Botman gave their reaction. Brazil’s Bruno Guimaraes, who will also be in Qatar for the tournament, also gave his response.
