Thomas Partey has been applauded by Ghanaian media after his display in a 1-1 draw against Nigeria – sending the Arsenal star’s country to the 2022 World Cup. The Gunners star scored, and was handed an 8.5/10 rating.

Partey, 28, has been in excellent goalscoring form for his country of late, scoring three goals in his last eight – the latest a snapshot from 25 yards. In truth, it was a howler of a mistake from Nigeria goalkeeper Francis Uzoho.

But it gave Ghana the lead in a crucial game to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar later this year – the loser being knocked out. Nigeria needed to win; Ghana only needed a point and that is what they got, drawing 1-1.

William Troost-Ekong equalised from the penalty spot but Partey and Ghana held on to book their place at the World Cup – and Ghana Web have applauded the Gunners ace, claiming he improved in the second half.

Earning an 8.5/10 rating, Ghana Web reported: “Despite losing the midfield battle in the first half, he raised his game after the break to hold on to win. Leadership as captain in absence of Andre Ayew deserves commendation.”

Partey shines for Ghana: Arsenal star doing it for club and country

Not only has his form been excellent for Arsenal of late, becoming the real midfield driving force that convinced Mikel Arteta to spend £45million and sign him from Atletico Madrid – but he is standing out for Ghana, too.

On paper, Partey should be one of Ghana’s stand-out players and while he has only won 38 caps – he is now starting to be the man they turn to. His 12 goals in 38 games is impressive, one he will hope to replicate at club level.
