Aston Villa fell to a 1-0 loss to Liverpool as Steven Gerrard faced the side he is viewed as a legend at, yet it was Ezri Konsa who emerged as the hero for the visiting side.
The 24-year-old defender has often been viewed as one of the most underrated centre-backs in the Premier League, with the former Brentford star still yet to receive an England call-up despite some outrageous numbers this season.
As per Sky Sports News, Konsa is one of the statistically best one-on-one defenders in the Premier League this season. And these qualities were on full show this weekend at Anfield, with the centre-back providing one of the moments of the match.
Liverpool’s front three broke through with just Konsa standing between them and Emi Martinez. For many, a goal looked certain, however, the Villa defender stood tall and was able to quell the danger by composing himself with excellent positioning and timing.
Indeed, the moment was a masterclass in how to defend when the pressure is on, and Konsa’s decisions no doubt led to Liverpool failing to double their lead late on in the match.
As for Konsa’s defensive partner, Tyrone Mings, the England international was at fault for Villa conceding defeat against Liverpool, with the centre-back dragging Mohamed Salah to the ground inside the penalty area.
Villa fans laud Konsa for Liverpool defending

Whilst Mings has been at the centre of criticism from supporters this season, Konsa’s admiration from fans continues to rise, with plenty of followers on social media in disbelief over the 24-year-old’s defending against Liverpool.
Here’s what some Villa fans had to say about Konsa’s brilliant defending against Liverpool on Twitter…
