Newcastle fans have taken to Twitter to react after the Pink Un’s Paddy Davitt revealed that Norwich’s move for Kristoffer Ajer is well advanced.
What’s the story?
Well, according to the Daily Mail, the 23-cap Norway international was set to become Newcastle’s first signing of the summer.
On the basis of that story, it sounded like a £6 million deal was all but done.
However, The Athletic recently revealed that the Magpies are no longer favourites to sign the Celtic colossus.
Now, Bayer Leverkusen and Norwich have moved ahead of Steve Bruce’s side in the race to sign the 23-year-old.
Ajer made 46 appearances in all competitions for Celtic during the 2020/21 season, and is a commanding centre-back with real potential.
Whoever lands him this summer will be getting a real gem of a defender.
Potential embarrassment for Newcastle
Losing out to Bayer Leverkusen wouldn’t be the biggest nightmare.
They can, at least, offer Ajer Europa League football.
However, allowing newly-promoted Norwich to steal a target would be quite embarrassing for Newcastle.
Unless something changes, it seems as if that’s what will happen.
