According to The Telegraph, Newcastle United are keen on a move for Everton’s Anthony Gordon.

The young winger has been the subject of interest from a number of top clubs this summer, including Tottenham Hotspur, but now, Newcastle are keen on bringing the 21-year-old to St James’ Park.

Gordon was one of Everton’s key players as they beat the drop last season, and while there weren’t many players who shined at Goodison Park last season, Gordon certainly made his mark.

Don’t just take our word for it either, he even earned praise from former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez during his short stint back on Merseyside.

What’s been said?

Benitez praised Gordon a few times last season.

“I was talking with Anthony. He is a player who is very explosive and when you have this, in this case, it is not the main quality,” Benitez said after a game against West Ham. “He is a player who is learning and growing and can be an impact coming from the bench.”

Benitez also praised Gordon ahead of Everton’s game against Tottenham.

“I’m really pleased for him. He’s growing and getting better. He has to keep balancing his game. He will be an important player for Everton in the future,” Benitez said.

Seal of approval

As every Newcastle fan probably knows, if Rafa Benitez rates you then you must be something special.

Unfortunately for Rafa, his time at Everton didn’t work out, but he did manage to get a tune out of Gordon, and we can only imagine how good he would be if he joined Newcastle and played in a more positive environment.

Gordon could be a star for the Magpies, but as Benitez’s comments show, Everton know they have a brilliant player on their hands, and we can’t imagine they’ll be keen to sell him anytime soon.
