Alan Shearer has said on Twitter that Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk was deservedly sent off against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United at St. James’ Park in the Premier League on Sunday.
Virgil van Dijk was shown a straight red card in the first half of the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Liverpool.

The Netherlands international central defender was given the marching orders for bringing down Alexander Isak, as the Sweden international striker was about to run through on goal.
Former Tottenham Hotspur striker Gary Lineker does not think that Van Dijk should have been sent off, but ex-Newcastle striker Shearer believes that the £220,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender was deservedly punished.
We believe that Van Dijk was rightly sent off.
The former Celtic star clearly touched Isak and brought him down.

And the Newcastle striker was through on goal.
It was a bad error from Van Dijk, who has not been at his best for a while now.
The Dutchman was far from his best last season, and the Liverpool central defender has not been in great form so far this campaign.
We know that Van Dijk is a very good and experienced defender, but things are simply not working for him at the moment.
Perhaps Liverpool should start thinking about finding a long-term replacement for Van Dijk and should begin their search now so that they can bring in someone next summer.
