The Daily Mail reports Hirst is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday next summer.
An article about George Hirst’s future at Sheffield Wednesday has prompted an angry reaction from Owls supporters.
The piece, written by the Matt Barlow of the Daily Mail, states that Hirst is set to leave Hillsborough at the end of his contract next summer, “having reached the inescapable conclusion that the club he loves does not have his best interests at heart”.
It claims Hirst had agreed to sign a new deal with the club at which his father, David, made his name between 1986 and 1997, but a disagreement with the Owls’ chairman, Dejphon Chansiri, has stopped that from happening.
As a result, Hirst has yet to appear for Wednesday at any age level this season – with manager Carlos Carvalhal confirming last month that the reason is contract related – although he continues to be picked for England’s Under-19s.
Nevertheless, it is not the club but Hirst and his advisers who, in the eyes of many Owls fans, are to blame for the youngster’s predicament – and for feeding the Daily Mail a “one-sided” version of events.
