Darren Bent has told talkSPORT Breakfast (31/08/21 at 9:50 am) that he is ‘disappointed’ that Jesse Lingard won’t’ be leaving Manchester United and re-joining West Ham.

The former striker thought Lingard would ‘get out’ and play, but the Hammers have been dealt a transfer blow on deadline day.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter that there is now a ‘huge’ chance Lingard will stay put at Old Trafford.

This is also after the East London club signed Nikola Vlasic on a permanent basis from CSKA Moscow.

When Bent was told about the Lingard news, he questioned the game time he will now get at his boyhood club.

“A little bit disappointed,” said Bent. “I want to see Jesse go and play football.

“But it’s hard to leave Manchester United. He got back into the England squad, certainly last season, off the form of West Ham given how important he was for their team.

“But I would be a little disappointed but I would have thought that he would go maybe tried to get out and play.”

If Lingard is guaranteed game time at Manchester United this season then there’s no reason why he should leave.

Plus, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo would have lifted the move in Manchester and excited someone like Lingard given that he can now play alongside one of the greats of the game.

But, from West Ham’s perspective, they didn’t test Man United’s resolve with a bid to see how they would react.

Lingard not signing would sadden the West Ham fanbase, but given their start to the new Premier League season and the fact that they have now made moves in the market, then all of that will dampen the mood slightly.
