Liverpool have fallen behind in their Premier League opener v Fulham this afternoon.
This was an ideal first game of the new campaign for the Reds, who finished second in both the Premier League and Champions League last season.
With the Cottagers being a newly-promoted outfit, three points for Liverpool was heavily expected.
However, Marco Silva’s side aren’t sticking to the script and Aleksandar Mitrovic powered a brilliant header past Alisson on 33 minutes to give the hosts a shock lead.
Mitrovic rose highest above Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to score the far-post header.
The 23-year-old barely even got off the ground to challenge the Serbian hitman and Jim Beglin has criticised the England international’s defending.
He said live on Optus Sport: “I’m thinking ‘jump’ for Alexander Arnold. Get off the ground. Don’t let him bully you, out-muscle you. Alexander-Arnold never really competed for it.”
Fulham v Liverpool
Liverpool, who have an £85 million attacker on the bench in Darwin Nunez, could and definitely will be a lot stronger in the second half.
It’s been a frustrating first half, especially considering how good they looked in the Community Shield victory over Manchester City last week.
But Klopp will undeniably have his troops much more motivated after the break because an opening-weekend defeat, by a club only just back in the Premier League, wouldn’t be a good look at all.
